The Lazy Lizard: A Relaxing Beachside Bar on Caye Caulker

In April of 2023, my sister and brother-in-law tied the knot in beautiful Belize on the beaches of Ambergris Caye. As any sister would, I put together a laid back bachelor-bachelorette party for the happy couple so they could relax and enjoy time with their friends and family before the wedding. My search for a venue for our afternoon shenanigans did not take long as I quickly stumbled upon The Lazy Lizard, a beachside bar and grill on the island of Caye Caulker.

The Lazy Lizard turned out to be the perfect atmosphere for an afternoon of rum punches, ceviche, beach vibes, and swimming in the Caribbean. Keep reading for more information on this must-visit beach bar for your next Belizean adventure.

The Atmosphere at The Lazy Lizard

The Lazy Lizard located on “the split” and offers stunning views of the crystal clear Caribbean Sea. There are plenty of chairs and tables to lounge at and eat at, but we opted to rent the beach cabanas available. In true wedding preparation fashion, we decorated one as the Groom’s cabana, and one as the Bride’s cabana. Even without the cabanas though, we would have enjoyed lounging on the comfortable beach chairs, sipping delicious cocktails, and soaking up the sun.

Overall, the atmosphere at The Lazy Lizard is relaxed and welcoming, with a friendly and lively vibe that perfectly captures the laid-back spirit of Caye Caulker. The bar and restaurant are open-air, with plenty of shade available for those who want a break from the sun. The music is upbeat and fun, and there is always a great crowd of people mingling and enjoying themselves.

Food and Drinks at The Lazy Lizard

The food at The Lazy Lizard is delicious and satisfying, with plenty of options to suit all tastes. The menu is focused on seafood and Belizean cuisine, with fresh and flavorful dishes that are made to order. We tried the conch ceviche and both the presentation and quality were great. The portions were generous, and the prices were very reasonable for the quality of the food.

The drinks at The Lazy Lizard were also a highlight of our visit. We ordered some buckets of beer and pitchers of rum punch and panty rippers to get the party started. Eventually someone also ordered a pitcher of lizard juice, which was a bright green slushy that eventually reappeared for a drinking competition that my brother-in-law absolutely crushed.

Beach Cabanas at the Lazy Lizard

If you are headed to the Lazy Lizard with a group, a beach cabana is a great idea to give people a private shaded area. They each have a ceiling fan to get the air moving, some side tables, and a large queen size lounger to relax on as your soak up the views. You can rent them for a half day or a full day. I actually reached out ahead of time to see if I could reserve them for our group, and the staff was incredibly helpful and timely with their email response.

The Split

The Split is a narrow channel that divides Caye Caulker into two parts, and it is the perfect spot for swimming and water activities. The water is crystal clear and the sun shines down on it, creating a shimmering effect. The Lazy Lizard has a diving board for guests to plunge into the bright blue waters of The Split, creating the perfect entrance into the tranquil waters.

Jumping off the diving board is definitely a must-do activity for any thrill-seeker. The diving board is positioned at just the right height to make the jump exciting but not too scary. As you climb up the ladder to the board, your heart races with anticipation. Once you reach the top, you take a deep breath and leap off the board, soaring through the air before plunging into the refreshing water below. The rush of adrenaline and the cool water make for an unforgettable experience that you will want to do again and again.

You may even get lucky and catch a splash contest while you are at The Lazy Lizard! Enter the contest to have your splash ranked from 1-10 and maybe even win bragging rights for the biggest splash. Whether you are an experienced swimmer or just starting out, The Split at the Lazy Lizard is a fantastic destination for water lovers of all levels.
